Book Series

Book series have been appearing since the eighteenth century. One of the earliest was The Poets of Great Britain Complete from Chaucer to Churchill (London: John Bell, 1777- ).

In 1841 the German Carl Christoph Traugott Tauchnitz launched his Collection of British and American Authors which existed for almost a century. With the coming of the railways publishers began to offer travelers series of books to be read during journeys, such as Routledge's Railway Library (1848-1899).

Reprint series have been many and have included The World's Classics (1901- ), Everyman's Libary (1906- ) and Penguin Classics (1945- ).
