VINTAGE BOOKS (ALFRED A. KNOPF; RANDOM HOUSE)

Series Note: Vintage Books was founded in New York in 1954 by Alfred A. Knopf as a high-quality paperback series devoted to reprinting its successful hardcover authors in the field of serious literature and nonfiction. It differed from ordinary mass-market paperback lines by presenting durable works in an inexpensive but bookshop-oriented format. Early Vintage titles included fiction, drama, criticism, history, politics, philosophy, biography, and cultural essays, with authors such as Albert Camus, Thomas Mann, William Faulkner, E. M. Forster, Andre Gide, Richard Hofstadter, Eugene O'Neill, Czeslaw Milosz, Elizabeth Bowen, D. H. Lawrence, H. L. Mencken, Willa Cather, and Jean-Paul Sartre. The series helped establish the American trade paperback as a respectable vehicle for modern classics, European literature in translation, and intellectually ambitious nonfiction. After Random House acquired Alfred A. Knopf in 1960, Vintage continued within the Random House group, retaining its association with literary quality, cultural seriousness, and accessible editions of important modern books.

The serial numbers in the Alfred A. Knopf period (1954-1960) mostly utilized a "K-" prefix (e.g. K-1 through to K-104). When Random House acquired the series in 1960, the new publisher mostly phased out the "K-" prefix and transitioned to "V-" prefix series numbers (e.g. V-105 through V-999).
