TWENTIETH CENTURY INTERPRETATIONS (PRENTICE-HALL/SPECTRUM BOOKS) - CHECKLIST
Series Note:
Twentieth Century Interpretations was a series of compact critical anthologies published by Prentice-Hall of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, mainly between 1968 and 1983 as part of its Spectrum Books program.

General editor Maynard Mack, a Yale University professor, supervised the series, while each volume was prepared by a specialist editor.

Most books focused on a single literary work and usually carried the subtitle "A Collection of Critical Essays". They combined an editorial introduction, selected modern criticism, and a bibliography in an inexpensive format designed chiefly for college teaching and individual study. Subjects ranged from classical, medieval, and Renaissance literature to modern fiction, poetry, and drama.

The series should be distinguished from Prentice-Hall's related Twentieth Century Views, which generally treated an author rather than one work.

By presenting differing critical approaches side by side, Twentieth Century Interpretations offered students an accessible introduction to scholarly debate and now preserves a valuable record of mid-twentieth-century literary criticism.

Bibliographical qualification

The volume titles and editors marked † are securely documented, but their S-numbers—S-840, S-855, S-890 and S-892—are presently reconstructed from their positions between independently confirmed adjacent numbers. I have not yet located records that explicitly print those four S-numbers.

Three later volumes are documented as part of Twentieth Century Interpretations, but the catalogue records examined do not give them Spectrum S-numbers:

- Twentieth Century Interpretations of The Grapes of Wrath, edited by Robert Con Davis, 1982.
- Twentieth Century Interpretations of The Glass Menagerie, edited by R. B. Parker, 1983.
- Twentieth Century Interpretations of Death of a Salesman, edited by Helene Koon, 1983.
- Twentieth Century Interpretations of The Odyssey, edited by Howard W. Clarke. 1983.
