THE TOM SWIFT SERIES (GROSSET & DUNLAP)

Series Note: This was a series of American juvenile science fiction and adventure novels that emphasized science, invention, and technology. The books in the series were evidently inspired by the achievements of inventors, entrepreneurs and aviation and motoring pioneers such Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Glenn Curtiss and Alberto Santos-Dumont. In the titles listed on this page the main character, Tom Swift, is an adventurous and inventive teenager who loves inventing gadgets, solving problems and mysteries, and involving himself in feats of exploration and rescue.

This series was written by Victor Appleton, who was actually the collective pseudonym of various writers (for example, Howard R. Garis) employed by the book packaging company, the Statemeyer Syndicate. The books were first published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York. Some of the titles were later reprinted by Whitman Publishing Co., Racine, Wisconsin.

Over the years the titles in this series have been translated into many languages and have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.
