The last emperor of China had a concubine with whom he was much in love. In the year of the Boxer Rebellion he was forced to flee the Forbidden City. The concubine also escaped, taking with her the magnificent jewels he had given her, chief among them a historic necklace of great beauty. In a few months she had a daughter, but the Emperor never knew that there had been a child. It is the year of the Great Leap Forward. Lyn and Michael Brian, a jewel buyer, are touring China with the Canadian League for International Understanding. Lyn wears a copy of a beautiful old Chinese necklace, which arouses strange reactions wherever they go, and she apparently despises her husband. Nora Miller, with a journalist's instincts, suspects a plot to smuggle jewels out of the country. Fearing that the entire group may be endangered, she trails Lyn through the crumbling streets of Peking.
