Series Note: The series editor of The Library of American Biography was Jared Sparks (1789-1866), an American historian, educator, and Unitarian minister. In 1838 he was appointed was the first McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard College and in the years 1849-1853 Sparks served as the President of Harvard College. He was the first academic historian to encourage the study of American history and to perform original research in the field and he was a pioneer in large-scale collecting of documentary material on American history.
Another series with the same name, The Library of American Biography, was published by Little, Brown and Company in the years 1954-1988.
