The series name, "The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories", was often abbreviated on the book covers to "The Hardy Boys". The target audience of this series was "boys from 10 to 14 who like adventure stories, packed with mystery and action" (publisher's blurb, 1954).

The books were produced by a book packager named the Stratemeyer Syndicate and published by Grosset & Dunlap from 1927 until 1979 when Simon & Schuster bought out the Syndicate. The author of each of the titles was Franklin W. Dixon, a pseudonym of a number of Stratemeyer Syndicate authors, including the Canadian Leslie McFarlane.
