BRITAIN IN PICTURES - CHECKLIST
Series Note: The aim of the Britain in Pictures book series was "to tell a social history of Britain, spurred no doubt by the war and a desire to instill pride in the population for the great accomplishments" of the country. It was thus designed as a moral booster and remind and educate citizens about Britain's national identity that could then be seen as under threat.
"Collins published this series to acknowledge and celebrate the nation's unique contribution to the arts, science, industry and culture, exploring topics from chess and golf to printed books, photographers, caricaturists and cartographers. Britain's quaint eccentricities are also captured in British Hills and Mountains, Windmills and Watermills, Waterways and Canals, Ship Builders and Fishermen, each composed by the noted authorities and talents of the day; each beautifully illustrated."
Each octavo-sized book in this series was beautifully and affordably produced with "one-colour printed paper boards with matching dust jackets, and the exquisite colour and black-and-white images". In addition to this attractive physical format the content was written by such great literary, political and artistic greats of the time as Cecil Beaton, John Betjeman, Edmund Blunden, Neville Cardus, R. J. Cruikshank, Graham Greene, Jacquetta Hawkes, George Orwell, David Low, Rose Macaulay, Francis Meynell, John Piper, Vita Sackville-West and Edith Sitwell.
