Series Note: This series was published by William Blackwood and Sons (often referred to as Blackwoods) of Edinburgh and London. The General Editor of this series was J. H. Lobban [John Hay Lobban].

On the front panel of the cover of some volumes the Blackwoods logo is printed. The logo includes the letters "B", "W" and "&" entwined together and the Latin words "Per vias rectas" (English, "by righteous paths").

According to a bookseller advertisement in the Wellington Independent, 6 March 1871, the price in 1871 of each volume -- at least in Wellington, New Zealand -- was 3s. 6d. per volu
