"Emergency Years is a personal account of the communist insurgency in Malaya at the peak of its violence. The struggle lasted forty-one years, finally ending with the surrender of Malayan Communist Party leader Chin Peng in 1989. Author Leonard Rayner lived and worked in the small town of Batu Arang, home of Malaya's only coal mine and a prime target of communist guerrillas. The name Batu Arang, as one soldier put it, sounded ominous -- and the place lived up to his view."--Back cover

ASIAN STUDIES SERIES (HEINEMANN ASIA)

Series Note: In the early 1960s Leon Comber, then the Southeast Asian Representative of Heinemann Educational Books Ltd. was planning several book series that he could launch. One of these would be the Asian Studies Series. He later wrote: "I had a dream of starting an academic non-fiction list of books about the Asian area straddling all academic disciplines, and although I had to put aside for the time being, I mentally reserved the title 'Asian Studies Series' for it." (Source: Leon Comber, "Publishing Asian Writers in English", in: Mimi Chan and Roy Harris, Asian Voices in English, Hong Kong University Press, 1991, pp. 79-86.)

Comber would realise his dream and launch the Asian Studies Series in 1966 with the listed publisher being Heinemann Asia.
