THE PITT PRESS SERIES (CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS)
Series Note:

Format: Hardback. "Many of the books in this list can be had in two volumes, Text and Notes separately." -- More's Utopia. Rev. J. Rawson Lumby, ed. (C.U.P., 1891. The Pitt Press Series.)

The history of The Pitt Press Series:

"During the second part of the [nineteenth] century the University [of Cambridge] itself became outward-looking. It recognised a duty to the schools of the country, and not only to those which sent boys (and soon girls) to be educated at Cambridge. It took its part in the national examinations system, and the scheme of the Local Examinations was supervised by Cambridge as one of the main centres from 1858. (...] [In 1874 it occurred to G. F. Browne, the Secretary of the Local Examinations Syndicate] in drawing up syllabuses for examinations in English, modern languages and classics, the the Press might be asked to
undertake to undertake to supply the editions of texts which his Syndicate prescribed." [1]

This resulted late in 1874 in the launch of series that would soon become known as The Pitt Press Series for Schools (or, in short, The Pitt Press Series).

"Fifteen hundred of each book were printed, the books were stereotyped, the prices were fixed at two shillings (except Aeneid XII, which was 1s. 6d.) and the editors were paid £25, or £35 for a longer book. (...) Eventually the Pitt Press Series consisted of over two hundred volumes." [1]

Arranged under broad subject headings and then by author, title, editor, and other details (including price in shillings and pence).
